Orthodontics and invisible aligners

Why good tooth alignment is more than aesthetics

Malocclusions of the teeth and bite are more than a question of aesthetics. Crowded or overlapping teeth are harder to keep clean, which can encourage tooth decay and gum inflammation. An unfavourable bite distributes chewing forces unevenly and can wear down individual teeth more heavily over the years. At the same time, a harmonious smile is, for many people, part of their quality of life. Orthodontics helps at any age: in children and adolescents just as much as in adults.

Today, much of this can be corrected discreetly and predictably, with invisible aligners or fixed braces. Aligners are clear, removable trays that move the teeth step by step into their planned position. Because we plan the treatment digitally, you see the expected result on screen before the first step begins. Which path is right for you depends on your malocclusion: not every case can be resolved with aligners, and for certain tooth movements fixed braces are the better choice.

How we proceed

  1. 01 Assessment and treatment recommendation

At the outset, we examine the health and position of your teeth, your bite and the position of your jaws including the jaw joints. We also discuss your concerns with you. On this basis, we recommend a suitable treatment and estimate roughly how long it will take. Often, this initial assessment already indicates whether invisible aligners or fixed braces are the right approach.

  2. 02 Planning and simulation

For precise planning, we create a 3D scan of your teeth and take two X-rays: a panoramic X-ray and a lateral cephalogram. In addition, we take a standardised series of orthodontic photographs. From this information, we determine the optimal tooth position and define the tooth movements needed to achieve it. We then show you the expected result in a simulation.

  3. 03 Active treatment phase

Your teeth are now moved orthodontically into their planned position. Depending on the treatment phase, you change your aligners for a new tray roughly every one to two weeks. At monthly check-ups, we verify that treatment is progressing as planned. If fixed braces are used, they are adjusted at this appointment.

  4. 04 Retention phase

Once active treatment is complete, a retainer keeps the achieved result stable. This is either a thin, clear tray worn at night or a fine wire, invisible from the outside, fixed behind the front teeth. Teeth move throughout life, which is why retention remains a permanent part of the process.

Good to know

Are invisible aligners always the best choice? Not necessarily. For mild to moderate malocclusions, aligners and fixed braces achieve comparable results, and the removable aligner makes oral hygiene easier. For more complex corrections, such as larger rotations of individual teeth or when teeth need to be moved further, fixed braces are often the better option. Aligners also come with one condition: they only work if worn consistently, usually around 22 hours a day. Which treatment is best for you is not something we decide by trend, but according to your individual findings and what suits your daily life.

How long does orthodontic treatment take? This depends on your starting position. Minor corrections are possible within a few months, while comprehensive treatment usually takes one to two years. We will give you a more precise estimate after the initial assessment.

From what age should children have their first check-up? Professional associations recommend a first orthodontic check-up at around seven years of age. Not because treatment is usually already needed at that point, but because the bite and jaw development can be properly assessed for the first time then. The result is often reassuring: it is enough to simply wait and see for now. In certain cases, such as a crossbite or strongly protruding front teeth, an early start makes sense.

If your main concern is a more beautiful smile, sometimes cosmetic dentistry can also achieve your goal, for example with veneers. We will discuss together what makes sense in your case.

More treatments

  1. Digital dentistry

Examine thoroughly, plan precisely, deliver digitally: from the first diagnosis to the finished restoration, we work digitally throughout. This makes treatments more accurate, more comfortable and more predictable.

  2. Professional dental cleaning and preventive care

Healthy teeth begin with good prevention. Professional dental cleanings as part of a personalised preventive care plan remove plaque, tartar and discolouration before problems arise.

  3. Periodontics and gum health

Bleeding gums are a warning sign. We treat gingivitis and periodontitis with modern periodontal therapies to preserve your teeth and jawbone.

  4. Conservative dentistry: fillings, inlays and onlays

Your own tooth is the best tooth there is. We take the least invasive approach to tooth decay and minor damage, using fillings in the natural colour of your tooth, and restore larger defects with precisely fitted ceramic inlays and onlays. This way, as much healthy tooth structure as possible is preserved.

  5. Root canal treatment (endodontics)

An inflamed tooth nerve does not mean the end of the tooth. Wherever possible, we keep the living nerve. Where that is not possible, a root canal treatment removes the inflammation from inside the tooth, relieves the pain and saves the tooth from extraction.

  6. Orthodontics and invisible aligners

We correct tooth position and bite with treatments tailored to each patient: from traditional braces to invisible aligners, for children, teenagers and adults.

  7. Dental crowns and partial crowns

Even a badly damaged tooth can usually be saved. A crown or partial crown restores its shape, stability and chewing function. That way you keep your own tooth.

  8. Tooth extraction and wisdom teeth

Sometimes a tooth extraction is the right treatment: when a tooth can no longer be saved or is completely in the wrong position, or when a wisdom tooth is causing problems. In that case we remove the tooth gently under local anaesthetic and, where needed, plan the right tooth replacement before the procedure. That way no permanent gap remains after the extraction.

  9. Dental implants and tooth replacement

The right answer for every gap: we replace a single missing tooth with an implant and a crown. If several teeth are missing, we close the gap with individual implants or an implant-supported bridge. And even for a jaw with no teeth left, we have fixed solutions that look good.

  10. Cosmetic dentistry

Healthy teeth can be beautiful too: we whiten them in a controlled way and correct shape and colour with veneers or tooth-coloured composite. You decide what should change, and we work as conservatively as possible.

  11. Children's dentistry

From the very first milk tooth: we support your child’s dental development with relaxed check-ups, fissure sealants and, where needed, gentle treatment of tooth decay.

  12. Teeth grinding and TMJ disorders

Teeth grinding, jaw pain and clicking in the jaw joint rarely have a single cause. We examine the function of the joint and the muscles and check the teeth for signs of grinding and clenching. A custom-fitted occlusal splint is often used, combined where needed with physiotherapy and other specialities.

  13. Snoring and sleep apnoea treatment

In many cases, snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea can be treated at the dental practice: with a custom-fitted splint that you wear at night.

  14. Nervous patients

Time, clear arrangements and an agreed stop signal: gentle dentistry for everyone who finds visiting the dentist difficult.
