Periodontics and gum health

Why healthy gums matter so much

Periodontitis is a bacterial inflammation of the periodontium, the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It progresses without pain for a long time and therefore often goes unnoticed for years. If left untreated, the jawbone breaks down, the teeth become loose and are eventually lost. The inflammation is localised, but its consequences affect the whole body. Among other things, it raises the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, can make blood sugar harder to control in diabetes mellitus and is linked to complications in pregnancy. Implants are at risk too. A related inflammation can develop around them, known as peri-implantitis.

The crucial point: once the inflammation is stopped, the breakdown comes to a halt. The earlier we begin, the more we can preserve.

How we proceed

  1. 01 Examination and hygiene phase

First we measure the periodontal pockets, take the time to explain the findings and remove all deposits above the gumline. We also show you how to keep the spaces between your teeth clean at home.

  2. 02 Gentle deep cleaning

Under local anaesthetic we clean and smooth the root surfaces below the gumline. That is where the bacteria driving the inflammation sit.

  3. 03 Regular monitoring

After six to eight weeks we check together how well the gums have healed. In most cases that is enough. Only if deep pockets remain do we discuss further steps, for example an open deep cleaning under local anaesthetic, supportive antibiotic treatment or targeted tissue regeneration.

  4. 04 Aftercare that protects

Periodontitis can be kept in check for good when two things come together: consistent oral hygiene at home and regular aftercare at the practice. This includes professional dental cleaning at close intervals, every three to six months for the long term.

Good to know

Once the jawbone has broken down, it does not grow back on its own. With certain types of defect, above all deep vertical loss along the root, it can be partly rebuilt using regenerative techniques. It is better, however, to treat early enough that it never comes to this.

If the gums were previously inflamed and swollen, the swelling goes down after treatment. Teeth may then look a little longer, the spaces between them may appear more open, and exposed necks of the teeth may be more sensitive for a while. This is not a setback but a sign of healing.

If exposed necks of the teeth bother you, in many cases they can be covered again, especially when the space between the teeth is still healthy. Using a connective tissue graft, periodontal plastic surgery restores a natural gumline.

Treatments in this area

  • Gingivitis treatment

Stops gum inflammation at the early stage, before it damages the bone.

  • Scaling and root planing

Deep cleaning below the gumline to halt periodontitis.

  • Gum and connective tissue grafts

Periodontal plastic surgery: covers recessions and reinforces the gum around teeth and implants.

  • Periodontal maintenance

Regular check-ups and cleanings so periodontitis does not return.

  • Gum surgery

Corrects deep pockets and gum defects when basic treatment is not enough.

Your first appointment

At your first appointment we assess the condition of your gums and explain clearly what the findings mean and which steps make sense. Without any rush, and in your own language.

More treatments

  1. Digital dentistry

Examine thoroughly, plan precisely, deliver digitally: from the first diagnosis to the finished restoration, we work digitally throughout. This makes treatments more accurate, more comfortable and more predictable.

  2. Professional dental cleaning and preventive care

Healthy teeth begin with good prevention. Professional dental cleanings as part of a personalised preventive care plan remove plaque, tartar and discolouration before problems arise.

  3. Periodontics and gum health

Bleeding gums are a warning sign. We treat gingivitis and periodontitis with modern periodontal therapies to preserve your teeth and jawbone.

  4. Conservative dentistry: fillings, inlays and onlays

Your own tooth is the best tooth there is. We take the least invasive approach to tooth decay and minor damage, using fillings in the natural colour of your tooth, and restore larger defects with precisely fitted ceramic inlays and onlays. This way, as much healthy tooth structure as possible is preserved.

  5. Root canal treatment (endodontics)

An inflamed tooth nerve does not mean the end of the tooth. Wherever possible, we keep the living nerve. Where that is not possible, a root canal treatment removes the inflammation from inside the tooth, relieves the pain and saves the tooth from extraction.

  6. Orthodontics and invisible aligners

We correct tooth position and bite with treatments tailored to each patient: from traditional braces to invisible aligners, for children, teenagers and adults.

  7. Dental crowns and partial crowns

Even a badly damaged tooth can usually be saved. A crown or partial crown restores its shape, stability and chewing function. That way you keep your own tooth.

  8. Tooth extraction and wisdom teeth

Sometimes a tooth extraction is the right treatment: when a tooth can no longer be saved or is completely in the wrong position, or when a wisdom tooth is causing problems. In that case we remove the tooth gently under local anaesthetic and, where needed, plan the right tooth replacement before the procedure. That way no permanent gap remains after the extraction.

  9. Dental implants and tooth replacement

The right answer for every gap: we replace a single missing tooth with an implant and a crown. If several teeth are missing, we close the gap with individual implants or an implant-supported bridge. And even for a jaw with no teeth left, we have fixed solutions that look good.

  10. Cosmetic dentistry

Healthy teeth can be beautiful too: we whiten them in a controlled way and correct shape and colour with veneers or tooth-coloured composite. You decide what should change, and we work as conservatively as possible.

  11. Children's dentistry

From the very first milk tooth: we support your child’s dental development with relaxed check-ups, fissure sealants and, where needed, gentle treatment of tooth decay.

  12. Teeth grinding and TMJ disorders

Teeth grinding, jaw pain and clicking in the jaw joint rarely have a single cause. We examine the function of the joint and the muscles and check the teeth for signs of grinding and clenching. A custom-fitted occlusal splint is often used, combined where needed with physiotherapy and other specialities.

  13. Snoring and sleep apnoea treatment

In many cases, snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea can be treated at the dental practice: with a custom-fitted splint that you wear at night.

  14. Nervous patients

Time, clear arrangements and an agreed stop signal: gentle dentistry for everyone who finds visiting the dentist difficult.
